After I watched the video of myself teaching the class, I learned few things about my teaching style, as well as noticing the areas that could be improved.
I realized that I looked pretty confident about the material and explained it to the class pretty well. As I was teaching, my lesson was flowing pretty well and I didn’t use many fillers, which made the lesson a little more interesting and less lengthy.
However, it’s different from watching yourself than standing in front of the classroom. When I was teaching, I remember feeling a nervous and I kept thinking that I was going to get stuck and wouldn’t be able to finish it in time. Also, I was worried about being able to speak clearly to the class.
When I looked over the data from my peers, I realized that there were a few things that could be changed to make my delivery more effective. There were some mixed opinions about the projection of my voice and the movement in front of the classroom. Some thought that my volume was great, and the other suggested that I should speak up. The same opinions were stated for the movement. Also, I need to use more mathematical terms and have better explanations for the work presented on the board. There were a few suggestions to include more CFU’s and the inclusion of the class. Also, I remember that I was writing on the board a lot, and had a few suggestions to let the students do the work.
All in all, I think I did an “ok” job on my teaching. I know that there are areas that I should improve. These include interaction with the class, stronger use of mathematical terms, better explanations, classroom movement, and others. Also, watching myself and reading the opinions of others helped me to see my instruction in a different light and hopefully in the future, I will apply better practices to make it more effective.
